Now, Calgary’s only major antique show

Both COP and the Blue Mountain shows have been permanently cancelled. That leaves Spruce Meadows as Calgary’s only major antique show. The result—a Spruce Meadows show that is bigger than ever, and with much more variety!

Meet 70 antiques and collectibles dealers from across Canada in the Equiplex at Spruce Meadows. Great finds from BC, Alta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

2007 Show Highlights:

Sheldon Smithens, Calgary – Sheldon did COP every year from day one. Now, he’s coming to Spruce Meadows with his always top quality formal furnishings and art.

Bill Hawkins – A long-time Calgary dealer, Bill has maintained a low profile in recent years. Last year was his first antique show in 5 years, and he’s coming back this year. He has top quality china, porcelain and Oriental antiques.

Bulletin: Bill called to say he is bringing a movie poster from one of Hollywood’s all-time classic westerns. High Noon won four academy awards. The poster is 27" x 41" (United Artists 1952). It’s in colour. The image of Gary Cooper is a close-up covering most of the left half of the page (with gun in hand). Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado and Grace Kelly are all listed in fine print on the bottom of the poster. A small inset of Jurado and Bridges is in the lower right. It’s called a one sheet poster. The poster will be for sale in Bill’s booth, #55.

Gerry Frost, also from Calgary had an outstanding booth last year. Gerry has been saving some super Nostalgia for this show. He will be a pair of Red Indian gas signs, shown in the photo.

Malcolm Cox, from Cochrane likes fishing collectibles. He always has a good selection of antique reels. Its Malcolm’s second time at Spruce Meadows. See his fishing gear in booth #27.

Elleke Claassen Van Steen, also returns to Spruce Meadows, driving from Goodwood, Ontario with a trailer load of high end European antique furniture and fine art. This is investment quality interior design.

Markus Glickman, Red Door Antiques, Fernie BC - Great country furniture. As Markus says, “We specialize in early pine primitives from eastern Canada. Our clients love furniture and accessories from the 1800s in original surface and form...”

Gerry Marks, Greenwood, Ontario – Gerry is making his second-ever trip west, hauling a large load of Canadiana pine furniture. He is looking forward to meeting his customers from the now cancelled COP show. Gerry has been buying and selling antiques for over 30 years in rural Ontario. He finds great, old pieces – harvest tables, kitchen cupboards, dressers, work benches, store counters – and restores them to perfection. All Gerry’s refinished furniture is ready to use.

Gerry also has a passion for Maritimes folk art. He makes several trips a year to PEI, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick searching out unusual art. It’s often whimsical, humourous or naïve, and always colourful. There’s nothing subtle about Maritimes folk art. Gerry is coming to Calgary with a good selection of this highly collectible and original art.

Antique cookstoves and heaters were life sustaining essentials of the settler’s home, whether on the prairies, in the mountains or in the bush. Big and shiny, or petite and plain, cast iron stoves came in all styles and sizes. Most were tossed aside when electricity became widespread. But some remain, and Jeanne and Shane MacDonald, Vintage Stove Restoration, Calgary, have made a successful business out of restoring and refinishing these antique beauties.

The Antique Warehouse, Vancouver opened it's doors in 1989 and quickly became Vancouver's favorite place to shop for quality vintage and antique furniture.

From Interior Designers, to the novice beginner, 'The Antique Warehouse' is Vancouver's best source for some of the most beautiful furniture found anywhere on the West Coast.

Owners Larry Adams and Mark LaFleur pride themselves with unparalleled high standards of integrity and honesty of each and every piece in their store. Travelling to France, Belgium and England several times a year, Larry and Mark spend endless hours in search of the right piece.

"While we are one of the largest retailers in Vancouver," says Larry "We carefully choose each piece to insure that we have an authentic antique in superior original condition. We never refinish anything, but carefully restore each piece if necessary. Our philosophy is simple. Quality not quantity"

Popular feature: Antiques Identification clinic
A very popular feature last summer, the antique identification clinic returns to Spruce Meadows again this year. The clinic will run during show hours, Friday, August 17, Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19.

A fascinating aspect of keeping family heirlooms is the fact that they may have monetary value far beyond what their owners can imagine. Find out more about your own heirlooms at Antiques at Spruce Meadows, August 17, 18 and 19.

The Identification clinic will feature Peter Blundell, Independent Appraiser, author and lecturer on antiques. Peter’s career in antiques has taken him throughout Europe, the USA and across Canada since 1969. Now living in Vernon, he travels across the west, doing appraisal work.

How it works:

  • Bring your items for appraisal. You may bring as many items as you wish.
  • On arrival, sign up for an appointment time. The Clinic operates Friday, August 17 from 5 pm until 9 pm, Saturday, August 18, 10 am until 5 pm and Sunday, August 19, from 11 am until 4 pm,.
  • At your appointed time, meet with the expert and show him your treasures.
  • Fees: $8 per item.
